Most spectacular landscape in Saxony

The Elbe Sandstone Mountains certainly form the most spectacular landscape in Saxony. Table mountains, narrow ravines, rock needles and sandstone formations offer visitors a breathtaking view. The region is unbelievably picturesque and beautiful.

Famous painters, like Caspar David Friedrich, were inspired by nature here and painted master pieces there. Come and follow the famous painters' path! In order to protect the area from mass-tourism, a 368 sq. kilometer zone was declared a protected area long ago.

In 1990 part of this area became an official National Park. Along the Elbe River there are small towns and villages, all connected by vessels of the „Sächsische Dampfschifffahrt“, the biggest fleet of paddle steamers in Germany.

The "Felsenbühne" in Rathen is one of the most beautiful outdoor theatres in Germany. Opened in 1936, it is able to hold more than 2200 visitors. From May to September, there are theatres, operas and adventure plays in a spectacular atmosphere.
